Golf Clubs-Choosing Your Putter The Challenge of Controlling Your Mental Game Changing your feelings about the way you feel regarding a particular shot, can actually allow you to succeed. I know that sounds a little confusing, but it is true, for instance, you have been playing a poor game up to the 9th hole. You realize that your attitude has become very negative, and you recognize that if you dont change your attitude, you wont get any better. You begin to pretend that you are doing well, and believe that you will continue to do well until the end of the game. Confidence in your ability goes a long way in the game of pretend, and is imperative for its success. While we can make the distinction between anxiety and anger, our nervous system cant tell the difference. While both are powerful emotional reactions and trigger physiological arousal which trigger our negative responses (such as “fight or flight”), they are two very different emotions. Both of these are identified by very different thought processes and produce significantly different behaviors. Anxiety may cause a person to become quiet, withdrawn or even to leave, at its worst it can cause a person to freeze up (stage fright is a sign of anxiety) and be unable to continue with what they are doing. Anger produces more evident reactions and behaviors, both mentally and physically. Some people react to anger in the same way as they react to anxiety, holding their anger in often getting headaches and other problems in their physical health. Remember that you must control obsessive and perfectionist behaviors when you play golf. You are not perfect and must remember this in order to play good golf. A perfectionist may struggle with the many bad shots (which are to be expected) while the obsessive golfer may not be able to put the one bad shot out of his mine, dwelling on it to the detriment of his entire game.

It allows a smooth, long swing which sends the ball the correct distance. Chip shots are made from the back of your stance, causing the ball to come off low and with power. The chiputt starts with a tall stance, and doing the same thing with it makes rolling the ball a long distance easier. Hold your putter as you would when making a ship shot. Dont crouch as in a putting stance, put feet together with a small space between them, you aim left of the hole. Place the ball halfway between the ankles, since your feet are closer together, its is back in your stance, which is behind your breastbone. Leading the clubhead with your hands, make a long, rhythmic stroke into the ball. You may want to allow the body to turn slightly during long putts to maintain a natural rhythm. As with any new shot in golf, practice it a lot before putting it to use in your game, you will find that it is quite effective once you have learned its use. This is also a great shot when you are off the green with short grass, fairway and putting surface the only thing between you and the hole. |

This is called reading the green and should be done as you move towards the next shot. As you walk towards the green begin to notice the overall slope of the land and any features such as hills, bodies of water and valleys. These are items that will come into play as you plan your next shot. When you reach the ball, make a quick decision of what you think the ball will do. Now take a little time (a few seconds) checking from the ball to the hole, and maybe from the hole to the ball, this is how you will finalize the quick decision you made earlier. This can be done while other players are setting up for their shots; this allows you to be ready when your shot comes up. After deciding how a putt will break think about how much it is going to break, will it make a right to left move, and how many inches you think it will move. You will learn how to do this effectively as you play, as in all other situations, experience is the best teacher.
