Golf Clubs-Loft and Putting

The Importance of Alignment in Your Game

Three elements of proper alignment:

*Aligning the body, the ideal body  alignment aims all of your body,  feet, knees, hips, forearms and  shoulders parallel to the target  line.

*Aligning the ball, if the ball is  aligned to far forward, it can  cause you to hit it while the  putter is swinging up, causing the  ball to leave the green.

*Aligning the putter face,

according to some professionals if  your putter alignment is off by 10  degrees, and your putt is 20 feet,  you will miss the hole by 3 feet.   That sounds like aligning the  putter is pretty important!

Contact should be made with the  ball at the bottom of the stroke  for putting, at the point where  the putter head is horizontal to  the ground.

In the ideal stance this is  directly beneath the center of  your stance.  The center of your  stance should be directly below  your breastbone.

To determine your low point, try  some practice swings, the point  where the putter brushes the grass  is your low point.

It may be further back if you put  more weight on your back foot or  further forward if you lean  towards your target.

Your ball should be placed  slightly in front of your low  point, this is necessary because  each persons low point is  different.

The direction your putt is off may  be caused due to the fact that  your ball is positioned improperly  to your low point.  If you  continue to push puts right, try  moving your ball slightly forward.

If you pull your puts to the left,  try moving your ball back slightly  in your stance.

Placing the ball to far forward is  the most common mistake golfers  make.

This makes it easier for them to  see their shot, but gives the shot  less power than it should have.

Try lighter clubs with longer more
flexible shafts.  This will allow
for longer arc as well as more
speed from the club head.

You can go as much as two inches
longer on your clubs, but speak to
your golf pro before making this
decision.

There should be a little less
weight in the club head to
compensate for the added swing
weight of the longer shaft.  The
more flexible club head allows the
same effort to give a faster swing.

Try using an 80 to 85 percent
lower-compression ball.  This will
give a better feel with increased
control, particularly around the
greens.

If you are honest with yourself,
you will admit that you dont have
the strength of hand action now
which eliminates the ability to
get maximum distance out of your
long irons.

Pull them from the bag, these are
the 2-, 3- and 4-irons, and
replace them with 5-, 6- and 7-
wood.

Its not meant to discourage your
use of irons, if you have the
ability to hit them continue to do
so.

However it is pointless to
continue to use them if you only
play once or twice a week.
There are four advantages to using
woods instead of long irons:

*The longer shaft generates more
club head speed with no additional
effort.

*The ball is lofted quickly,
floats high and holds the green.

*Hitting down into the ball, even
in tight or bad lies allows you to
have good results when you hit
down on the ball

*When you step up to a trap you
can step up to it with a 5 iron.

These clubs are easy to use and
are quick confidence builders.
Practice will allow you to reduce
your score by three to five
strokes.

A firmer stroke decreases the  amount of break, using the  combination of the harder stroke  and a head wind; the break should  be all but eliminated. Side winds have several effects:

*More break when it blows the same  way the land slope.

*Less break when it blows against  the direction of the slope.

*It will change the speed of the  put, faster if blowing with the  ball, slower if blowing against  the ball.

*A putt being blown faster will  multiply the break

*A putt blowing slower will  decrease the break

Strong winds and gusts dont affect  just the ball; they may also  affect you by throwing off your  balance, something that is  important in effective putting.

You will be able to feel it when  the wind is unbalancing you, widen  your stance and if needed, bend  further over to compensate, make a  slightly more powerful stroke as  this changed stance will be  transmitted through the club.
